I really wanted to like this book but it just didn't measure up. There aren't many works available on Winterhalter so I jumped at the opportunity to add this one to my library. No question as to the quality of this artist's work, I've been an admirer for years. But the quality of the printing here is a different matter. The book arrived damaged so that afforded me all the more incentive to return it. I hope someone else will come along to produce a book worthy of this artist's tremendous talent. There is definitely a need. It's too bad this offering couldn't satisfy it. * A note to publishers of pictorial books - The internet offers a limitless selection of high-def images on practically any subject imaginable. If you are to entice customers to shell out cold hard cash for you publications the images need to be at least close to that same quality - and it can be accomplished. With the advent of the internet your industry has taken a big hit. If you are to stay in business you need to step up your game - just sayin'!
I was fortunate to see the exhibit in Houston.The paintings are beautifully reproduced with a richness reflecting Winterthalter's works. The text gives outstanding background and history regarding the world in which the model lived in. The descriptions of items in the paintings help enormously toward revealing the underlying subtext. This underlying subtext really helps me "read" the painting better and my appreciation of each work grows.The photos of the Worth and Pingat dresses of the mid to late 1860s are beautiful. I have many books regarding the designer dresses of the gilded age. This introduction provided by Elizabeth Anne Coleman well describes the role that these gowns played toward Winterhalter's approach in depicting his subjects.I highly recommend this book for the plates, photos and informative text about the work of Franz Xaver Winterhalter.I loved the exhibit and this book reflects the beauty of it.
This book is beyond delightful, as the seller described it to be in my purchase receipt. It is actually more like, HYPNOTIZING! It’s a great size and it’s literally a chronological encyclopedia of Winterhalter’s masterpieces with just the right amount of text explaining who is in the photo, how the portraits compares to the works of his contemporaries, as well as the history of these nobles who are so beautifully captured in time. I think that everyone will enjoy this book and find it captivating, regardless of their knowledge or interest in either painter or the subjects. I wish I could give this 1 million stars<3
This is one of the highest quality "coffee table books" I have. It is beautiful from front to back. This book is a must-have for art enthusiasts.
A wonderful book beautifully presented. Contains lots of information and quality photographs of Winterhalter's famous portraits. A great representation of mid-Victorian & European Monarchy and it's accompanying Society.
